19 July 1919
On the evening of Saturday, 19 July 1919, the people of Chalfont St Peter celebrated the end of the First World War with a gathering of the whole community at 18:00 on Gold Hill Common. Following the war the world sunk into an economic depression. This was particularly felt in rural areas and there was a shortage of employment and housing. The young man on the right bearing the placard 'I'm looking for a house' is Harry Ryder. See also gol-057, gol-059 and gol-060.
