Herbert Carter was born in the village in 1886. He trained as an assistant bread baker under James Payne (b. Flaunden) at Three Households. After marrying and setting up home in Deanway, Herbert set up on his own in premises on the High Street, which are now occupied by a greengrocer and beauty salon.
Herbert, his wife Irene, and son Cecil are shown standing outside the premises on this advertising postcard from the late 1920s. The van is a flat front Model T Ford.
